What this calculates

During a short circuit a large current flows for a short time and heats the conductor rapidly. The conductor must not exceed the insulation's short-circuit temperature limit (e.g. 250 °C for XLPE) before the protection clears the fault. IEC 60949 gives the maximum current, minimum section or maximum duration that satisfies this.

Step 1: adiabatic

"Adiabatic" assumes all heat stays in the conductor. Equating Joule heating with the heat stored in the conductor gives:

I_AD² · t = K² · S² · ln((θf + β) / (θi + β))

K와 온도 항을 묶은 k = K·√ln(...)

Combining K and the temperature term gives the familiar IEC 60364 factor k, so I_AD = k·S/√t.

Step 2: non-adiabatic factor ε

In reality some heat escapes into the insulation, so the conductor can carry slightly more current. IEC 60949 expresses this with a factor ε ≥ 1.

ε = √(1 + X·√(t/S) + Y·(t/S)), I = ε · I_AD

X and Y depend on the conductor and insulation and already include the imperfect thermal contact factor F = 0.7 (IEC 60949 Table 3). ε grows with t/S, i.e. longer faults and smaller conductors.

When does the difference matter?

The standard notes that for power cable conductors with t/S below 0.1 s/mm² the non-adiabatic increase is small and the adiabatic method may be used (e.g. 95 mm² for 1 s gives t/S ≈ 0.011, a difference of only a few per cent). Small conductors below 10 mm², screens and sheaths benefit much more. The step-by-step panel shows t/S and the actual ε so you can see the difference.

Temperature at the end of a fault

Solving the adiabatic equation for temperature gives the conductor temperature after a known fault current I_SC flows for t seconds (IEC 60949 clause 6). With the non-adiabatic option, the current is first divided by ε.

I_AD = I_SC / ε, θ = (θi + β) · exp(I_AD² · t / (K² · S²)) − β

Example: 10 kA for 1 s in a 95 mm² Cu/XLPE conductor (adiabatic) gives θ ≈ 168.6 °C, below the 250 °C limit.

Reading the I–t curve

The curve shows the maximum current the conductor withstands for each duration. On log–log axes the adiabatic curve is a straight line with slope −1/2. If the operating point (●) lies below the curve the conductor withstands the fault; above it, increase the section or clear the fault faster. Overlay the protection's time–current characteristic to check coordination.

예제 Worked example

Aluminium XLPE 95 mm², 1 s: ln((250+228)/(90+228)) = 0.4076 → k = 94.5 → I_AD ≈ 8.98 kA; ε ≈ 1.030 → I ≈ 9.24 kA.

How does IEC 60949 relate to the k factor in IEC 60364?

The IEC 60364-4-43 formula S = I·√t / k is the same as the IEC 60949 adiabatic method, with k = K·√ln((θf+β)/(θi+β)) (e.g. 143 for Cu/XLPE, 94 for Al/XLPE). IEC 60949 additionally applies the non-adiabatic factor ε to account for heat flowing into the insulation during the fault.

Should I use the adiabatic or the non-adiabatic method?

The adiabatic method assumes no heat leaves the conductor and is always conservative. The non-adiabatic method is more realistic and gives a slightly higher permissible current. For short faults (about 0.1 s or less) and large sections the difference is within 1–2%; it grows for longer durations and smaller sections. This calculator defaults to the adiabatic method, which is also what codes or specifications calling for the IEC 60364 k factor require.

Which current and duration should I enter?

Use the thermal equivalent short-circuit current Ith from IEC 60909 (which includes the heating effect of the DC component), and the fault duration t = protection operating time + breaker clearing time. The "Check cable withstand" link on the short-circuit calculator passes Ith and Tk automatically.

Why is the initial temperature set to the maximum operating temperature?

실제 부하가 낮으면 θi ≈ θa + (θmax − θa)·(Ib/Iz)² 로 낮춰 잡을 수 있지만, 근거가 분명할 때만 바꾸는 것이 좋습니다.

It assumes the worst case: a fault while the cable runs at full rated load. With a lighter load θi ≈ θa + (θmax − θa)·(Ib/Iz)² may be used, but only change it when the basis is clear.

What constants apply to aluminium alloy (AA-8000) conductors?

IEC 60949 lists aluminium only. Aluminium alloy conductors have similar resistivity and specific heat and are usually calculated with the aluminium constants; if the manufacturer gives specific K or β values, enter them under "Constants".

When should I calculate the conductor temperature after a fault?

KS C IEC 60949 6장의 식 θ = (θi + β)·exp(I_AD²·t/(K²·S²)) − β 를 씁니다.

When the fault current is already known (for example where earth-fault current is limited by impedance earthing), calculate the conductor temperature at the end of the fault and compare it with the insulation limit θf (e.g. 250 °C for XLPE), using θ = (θi + β)·exp(I_AD²·t/(K²·S²)) − β from IEC 60949 clause 6.

Is there a limit on fault duration? Are screens and sheaths covered?

The standard (IEC 60949, clause 1) states that the non-adiabatic method is valid for all fault durations, so this calculator does not limit the duration; for long durations also check the continuous current rating. Only conductors are covered; metallic screens and sheaths use different formulas (clause 8) that depend on thickness and surrounding materials.
